Classic Corvette Generations
Our dealership in Downers Grove, IL offers modern and restored classic Corvettes from all generations. Here’s a brief rundown of what you may find at our dealership on any given day:
C1 (1953 – 1962) – Originally designed to be a show car at the 1953 Motorama Display at the New York Auto Show, the first Corvette instead generated enough interest to warrant mass production. First-generation Corvettes are often called “solid axle” models, as an independent rear suspension was not available.
C2 (1963 – 1967) – The Corvette’s second generation saw the introduction of “Sting Ray” to the model’s name. These are smaller than first-generation models, and feature fiberglass body panels, hidden headlamps, and an independent rear suspension.
C3 (1968 – 1982) – Influenced greatly by the Mako Shark II concept car, the third-generation Corvette was the first to be available with removable T-top roof panels. The C3 was also the first Corvette to serve as a pace car for the Indianapolis 500.
C4 (1984 – 1996) – The C4 represents the first complete redesign of the Corvette since 1963. For reasons of both weight and rigidity, this model featured an all-aluminum suspension and aluminum brake calipers. C4 models also introduced an electronic dashboard with digital LCD displays for the tachometer and speedometer.
C5 (1997 – 2004) – With further structural rigidity and a more fluid exterior design, the fifth-generation Corvette was well-received by critics. Boasting a top speed of 181 mph, this model was offered with an all-aluminum small-block V8 engine.
C6 (2005 – 2013) – While the sixth-generation Corvette kept the front-engine, rear-transmission design of the previous generation, it was otherwise an entirely new vehicle, featuring new bodywork, a larger passenger compartment, reworked suspension geometry, and, for the first time since 1962, exposed headlamps.
C7 (2014 – Present) – Reviving the Stingray nameplate, the seventh-generation Corvette respects the past while firmly establishing itself as a supercar of the future. Revamped, angular styling give the car an aggressive stance, and interior refinement is much improved. As with every Corvette, the emphasis remains on the driving experience.
Of course, we’re happy to tell you more about each generation of the Chevrolet Corvette—and show you which models we currently have available—when you call or visit our showroom!
